About the Department:

The Production Unit, currently housed within of the Division of Theatre, supports all aspects of production for the performing arts at Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

This position will work in conjunction with the Stage Lighting Supervisor during production hangs/focuses and in the ongoing maintenance of the lighting inventory. The associate will provide support to graduate designers as they develop skills in advanced lighting technologies and prevailing practices used in the industry.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Stage Lighting Supervisor with the hanging, cabling, and focus of all projection, conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures as designed and assist in trouble-shooting any problems that may arise.

  • With the Stage Lighting Supervisor, maintain all equipment in the lighting inventory. Help to generate and maintain up-to-date related paperwork.

  • Along with the Stage Lighting Supervisor, train and supervise undergraduates in safe and proper lighting hang, focus and trouble-shooting practices.

  • Maintain neat and tidy working and performance spaces.

  • Some evening and weekend hours will be required during tech/dress rehearsals and on performance weekends.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A degree in Theatre Lighting technology is preferred.

A minimum of two years of experience is required. Candidate must have experience working with stage lighting elements, including basic wiring, console programming, and DMX addressing. Certified training for use and repair of intelligent fixtures and consoles is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must be able to work with students of varied skill levels in a positive, supportive manner.

Candidate must possess programming skills for at least one of these lighting consoles: ETC EOS, GrandMA 2, HES Hog, or Vari*Lite NEO.

Candidate with a working knowledge of projection equipment, digital media software, and specialized protocol networking is a plus. Knowledge of Vectorworks and Lightwright is recommended.

Candidate must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Candidate must possess a valid driver's license.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
  • Sit for long periods of time
  • Bend, squat, crawl, stand, climb, kneel
  • Reach above shoulders
  • Carry/lift over 50 lbs.
  • Handle objects (dexterity)
  • Work at heights up to 30 feet from the ground in a personnel lift and 55 feet in the grid
  • Work around moving machinery
