Position Definition:
Under general supervision, the Electrician performs journey level technical work in the repair, alteration, installation, maintenance, construction, and replacement of electrical systems and equipment, including wiring in buildings and equipment, such as power-distribution systems, lighting systems, motors, motor-controls and signaling.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Requires a comprehensive knowledge of the trade of electrician, including using appropriate tools, safety techniques, equipment and supplies to maintain, repair, and/or replace the electrical systems and equipment of buildings and other facilities, and to perform a variety of related construction and general maintenance work as required.

Examples of Duties/Essential Functions:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Inspect, plan, test, repair, install, service and maintain electrical systems, including conduit and duct systems, light and power circuits, motors, generators, transformers, control equipment switches, and other types of electrical lighting and power components.
  • Prepare and adhere to a schedule of periodic electrical system inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain electrical systems in compliance to electrical standards and codes, as well as health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate written records.
  • Install, test, maintain and repair fire alarm, clock and bell-signal systems.
  • Work from diagrams, blueprints, layouts, work orders, verbal instructions, or other specifications to install, troubleshoot, and test electrical systems.
  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Replace ballasts in lights; replace lighting, lamps and ballasts at athletics fields, including light towers, and in parking lots.
  • Perform general maintenance work as required, including clean-up after work is completed.
  • May serve as electrical inspector on small District projects.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and assist with the operation, maintenance and future expansion of district building automation systems.
  • Observe safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Assist other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:Two years journey-level experience as an electrician.

EDUCATION/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:Possession of a high school diploma/GED or the equivalent.Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California drivers license.


Knowledge Of:
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade.
  • Operation and repair of high voltage electrical switch gear system or similar systems.
  • Basic principles of electrical system design.
  • Scheduling campus lighting system using DDC, Andover, and ALC Building Automation Systems.
  • Use and maintenance of a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Modern software applications (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Safe work practices.


Skill To:
  • Inspect, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment.
  • Read, prepare, interpret and work from writing diagrams, schematics, drawings and blueprints.
  • Work effectively without immediate supervision.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Use and care for electrical tools.
  • Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Analyze and diagnose system malfunctions.
  • Travel to and from any district college campus and/or facility.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio- economic, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, mental or physical disability, and religious background of all students, faculty and staff, and with all individuals encountered in the performance of required duties.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Minimum for 2 years experience at a journey-level.
  • General software applications and maintain paperwork.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor - twisting, bending, lifting, continuous standing/kneeling/sitting based on job.


Special Instructions:
NOTE: New employees will be placed at the first step which is $79,704 per year, second step $83,736 per year or third step at $87,972 per year (depending upon experience). Based on current salary placement guidelines, all step increases for which an employee becomes eligible shall take place on July 1st of each fiscal year. These increases will occur, on annual basis, until the maximum step of $97,080 per year is reached on the salary schedule.
