The Electrician plays a crucial role in the operations, maintenance, and repair of the District's facilities. This position involves a variety of skilled activities related to the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. The Electrician will perform tasks such as wiring new and altered buildings, conducting preventative maintenance, troubleshooting electrical issues, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Working alongside a dedicated team of skilled trades, including Maintenance Mechanics, Carpenters, Painters, and HVAC Technicians, the Electrician is essential to Merced College's Capital Projects and Facilities Department. This role is vital for maintaining a safe and innovative environment for our staff and students.

General Description:

Under general supervision, to perform journeyman-level work in the design, layout, construction, installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Designs, calculates equipment loads, installs, services, inspects, and maintains electrical systems, including 12 KV high voltage, 480/277 3 phase, 120/208 3 phase and low voltage control wiring, conduit, duct systems, switchboards, panels, starters, lighting and power circuits, motors, generators, fans, heaters, fixtures, clock and fire alarm systems, VFD motors and controls
  • Performs troubleshooting work to locate defects in electrical systems
  • Estimates time and materials for projects, interprets electrical plans and specifications and checks for conformity with codes and safety regulations
  • Keeps material and cost records, may assist in maintenance, repair, installation, and testing of HVAC, telephone and electronic systems
  • Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment
  • National, State and local electrical codes and regulation

Ability to:

  • Design and draft electrical drawings, write specifications, calculate loads, and estimate material costs
  • Demonstrate skill in performing electrical installation and maintenance work
  • Make operating repairs to electrical machinery and equipment
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, and oral directions
  • Operate backhoes, trenchers, tractors and jackhammers used in underground electrical system installations
  • Use electrical tools and equipment skillfully and safely
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.


Typical Qualifications


Required:
  • High school diploma AND Journeyman-level professional training AND five (5) years of applicable work experience
    OR
  • The equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students


License or Certificate

  • Possession of valid California Driver's License
  • Journeyman certificate in electrical work
